Alfie Completes His Carpentry & Joinery Apprenticeship

Alfie joined us in October 2022, fresh out of school at just 16 years old. From day one, he impressed us with his drive, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn the trade. He quickly became a valued member of the team, and it’s been a pleasure to witness his growth into a capable and reliable tradesman.

As part of his apprenticeship, Alfie attended Heart of Worcestershire College one day a week, combining practical experience at Simon Watts Joinery with structured learning in the classroom and workshop. The Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship is designed to provide a solid foundation in the industry, and Alfie pursued the Architectural Joinery route focused on precision-made timber components crafted in a workshop environment.

The course covered a wide range of essential skills. These included interpreting construction drawings and specifications, understanding building regulations, and mastering the use and maintenance of both hand and power tools. Apprentices learn to prepare materials, manage resources, and maintain safe, compliant workspaces. The architectural joinery pathway specifically trains apprentices in the production of high-quality components like doors, windows, frames, and bespoke timber elements all skills that Alfie developed to a high standard.

In addition to the technical training, the course emphasised project planning, quality assurance, and health and safety ensuring that apprentices not only build well, but build responsibly. Assessment was rigorous and multifaceted, culminating in a formal End Point Assessment (EPA). This included a knowledge test, a professional discussion based on a portfolio of real work, and a practical assessment to demonstrate Alfie’s skills in a controlled environment.

Throughout his apprenticeship, Alfie worked on a wide variety of projects with us from bespoke joinery pieces to on-site installations bringing classroom learning directly into real-world application. His commitment to quality and attention to detail have made him an integral part of our team. He has developed not only as a craftsman but as a dependable and thoughtful colleague.

Having officially completed his apprenticeship in September of last year, Alfie now continues to work with us full-time. We are confident that he has a bright future ahead and look forward to supporting him as he advances in his joinery career.

Congratulations, Alfie. Your dedication, effort, and growth have been outstanding. We’re incredibly proud to have been part of your journey and even prouder to have you as a permanent member of the Simon Watts Joinery team.
